The new Historical Fiction Adventures series designed for grades three through six brings American history to life through fictional characters and historically accurate plots. The Locket turns the real life tragedy of March 25, 1911, into a story of survival instead of death and hopelessness. Galena, an 11-year-old Russian Jewish immigrant, works at the non-unionized Triangle Shirtwaist Factory with her older sister when a fire breaks out. The female workers are unable to escape to safety. Galena survives, but others do not, including her sister. After losing her sister and watching the horrendous events take place that day, Galena starts to fight to improve the working conditions in the New York City factories.
