The Jaguar
Known as the largest and most powerful cat in the Americas, the jaguar is a fierce and ferocious hunter. Sadly, this feline's numbers are dwindling due to threats from cattle ranching, mining, loss of habitat, and illegal hunting. Author Stephen Feinstein depicts some spellbinding human encounters with jaguars, the cat's physical characteristics and hunting habits, and the ways in which Aztec, Mayan, and many other ancient cultures worshipped the animal. Information about current jaguar conservation efforts are provided, as well as steps each of us can take to help save these great cats from extinction.

From the Saving Endangered Species series, this book discusses the physical characteristics and behaviors of jaguars, threats to the survival of the species, and steps that have been taken to protect the animals and their shrinking habitat. Serving up the basics for student reports, a two-page, bulleted list of facts opens the presentation, while the chapters that follow offer context as well as additional information. One interesting chapter looks at the representation of jaguars in artifacts from Olmec, Maya, Aztec, and other early civilizations. A major component of the books design is the inclusion of frequent, captioned screen captures from Web sites that are accessible through the publisher's own Internet portal. Other illustrations include an excellent map of the jaguars range as well as many photos of jaguars and cultural sites depicting them.
