Wild horses still run free in almost every western state, photographer and author Frank Staub writes. Most of Americas wild horses share their home with cowboys and cattle, wildlife, and various other users of our public lands. From prehistoric tapir-like animals, through the horses imported by Spanish explorers, on to the ponies of Assateague Island, the history of the American wild horse is covered here. It is an impressive overview and will satisfy young, serious horse-lovers. (To head off the Mommy, can I have a pony? questions, one chapter is titled Are wild horses hard to adopt and tame? Answer: yes. And you have to be eighteen years old, anyway. Sorry, kid.) Subjects covered include: ponies, mustangs, and burros; wild horses and the environment; horse bands; the slaughter and rescue of horses in the early 20th century; and the future of wild horses. If a child is not already attracted to horses, this book will not be of interest, but for mature preteens, this will be a fascinating book. The color photographs are very good and work perfectly with the text. Back matter includes an index, a glossary, and suggestions for further reading., Children's Literature
