In this addition to the Holidays—Count and Celebrate! series, young readers are introduced to Ramadan and invited to count a variety of items associated with holidays celebration. The book begins with a brief discussion of the religious background of the holiday, including definitions and pronunciations of words that are used later in the book. Then the text takes readers through various aspects of the holiday, complete with associated numbers: one minaret at the mosque, two dates, three girls reading the Quran, and so on up to ten special foods eaten at the end of the fast. Colorful photographs show children and adults enjoying Ramadan. The photograph of the henna paintings is particularly fascinating. The book also includes more information about Ramadan, vocabulary words and definitions, a list of resources for additional study, and an index. Overall, the book works very well. However, the photographs on the Count Again! pages do not contain the appropriate number of items for some of the numbers—this is a missed opportunity to reinforce the skill., Children's Literature
