Lava Scientist
Volcanologists brave spewing ash, flying rocks, and hot lava to gain a glimpse, sometimes literally., into some of the world's most temperamental geological features. Readers will learn about volcanologists in the field, and find out how they can become a volcanologist, too.

Latta interviewed a variety of Antarctic scientists and volcanologists in order describe their diverse experiences, responsi-bilities, and educations. Both books contain scientific terminology and explanations. Lava Scientist, in particular, contains some textbooklike explanations of plate tectonics and other geologic terms that could be diffi-cult for struggling readers. The final chapter describes careers in volcanology. Ice Scien-tist looks at life on a research vessel and of-fers a bit about the primary specializations in the field of oceanography. The books' greatest strength is in the variety of first-hand accounts and the scientists' breadth of experience. Both books have appealing color photographs and an attractive design that will appeal to general readers as well as to those interested in pursuing these excit-ing careers., School Library Journal August 2009
