How Do Animals Stay Safe?

Animals have many different ways to protect themselves. Some animals have spines or quills, some blend into their environments, and some have protective shells. Readers will learn about how armadillos, sloths, doves, and other animals stay safe. Beginning readers can get great facts, while the text for fluent readers gives more fun and fascinating information.

This new series introduces primary students to a variety of animals, but it is the photography that will wow young readers. The spreads contain dual-level text on one side with a small inset opposite a full-page color picture. Students engage first with the pictures, then the text. Young readers have three or four sentences related to the full-page picture. There is a contrasting-color box containing additional text for more fluent readers. The books include minimal vocabulary and a Learn More page providing books and websites for more information. Words to Know provides a dual-level vocabulary list. The series supports National Science Education Standards. Because each title is a question, the books provide a strong impetus toward inquiry learning. Table of Contents. Index.
