Courageous Teen Resisters

As the Warsaw ghetto in Poland went up in flames in April 1943, Jewish fighters fought bravely for twenty-seven days against Nazi soldiers. With deportation to a death camp all but certain, young Jews in the ghetto decided not to go quietly. Although the Nazis defeated the Jewish resistance group, the spirit of the uprising lived on. For Jews living in Europe during the Holocaust, survival was often the only form of resistance, but Jews in ghettos, concentration camps, and partisan groups across Europe did fight back. Told through the words of teen resisters, author Ann Byers details the stories of courageous young people who fought back against Nazi Germany.

In this interesting and revealing collection of personal accounts, readers learn of the courageous efforts of Jewish teens while fighting against the Nazis. Stories from primary sources tell of the discrimination and prejudice Jews experienced. As these acts against them became more violent, Jewish children and young adults formed resistance groups. While they knew the power of their efforts was no match for the Nazis, the teen resisters decided they would not go quietly. Chapters cover the actions taken by groups during the Holocaust while living in the ghettos, in the camps, in the forests of Poland, and even after Hitler's death. Lively writing, which connects paragraphs, brings the events and actions alive with each personal account flowing smoothly. Black and white photos provide an even more personal connection to the teens and the horrific events. A few simple color maps help place the movement and occupation by the Germans in Europe. A timeline, accompanied with photos, summarizes the sequence of events. There are chapter notes, a short glossary, a list of additional reading, and a comprehensive and complete index.
