In this solid addition to the Understanding Literature Series, the reader is introduced to the life and work of T.S. Eliot. There is an examination of his early works, as well as a look at his final years and lasting literary legacy. The book may be considered part biography and part a readers companion. Each of the works discussed is placed in historical and biographical context, and the text is illumined with a few black-and-white photographs. Special emphasis is placed on works often included in the curriculum such as The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday, and Four Quartets. There is also a chapter entitled The Poet as Playwright that examines Eliots works that have appeared on stage, and another chapter entitled The Poet as Critic which examines some of Eliots essays. A chronology, extensive chapter notes, a glossary of useful terms for literary criticism, suggestions for further reading, and selected Internet addresses are included. The author, Naomi Pasachoff, a research associate at Williams College, has written numerous books, including biographies of Marie Curie and Linus Pauling., Children's Literature
