This book is part of the Genius at Work!: Great Inventor biography series. It is a comprehensive retelling about the amazing achievements of Les Polsfuss, better known as Les Paul. The book catalogues Less fascinating journey in music, from receiving his first harmonica to being awarded the National Medal of Arts. The book tells of Less curiosity and ingenuity, starting when he took his mothers player piano apart. Les has invented many things in his life, but one of the first was a modified wire coat hanger to hold his harmonica while he played the guitar. Les was nourished by his mother, who believed in him, supported his dreams and pushed him to do all he could, even when he was down. Les has gone by many names during his lifetime. In addition to Les Paul, he has been known as Red Hot Red and Rhubarb Red. He has worked with some of the best in the music business, including Sunny Joe Wolverton, Fred Waring and Bing Crosby. Adversity has not stopped him. After he was in a car accident that broke six ribs and shattered his playing arm, he relearned how to play the guitar. In 2007, at the age of 92, he was still playing professionally. Les was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Also, in 2005, he was accepted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his inventions of the solid wood guitar, sound on sound recording, echo chambers, the Gibson Les Paul guitar, and the Les Paul Paulverizer.
