Ferris Wheel!

Though Ferris wheels are a staple at every fair and amusement park today, the man whose name they carry was at first ridiculed for proposing the idea for the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. A feat of human engineering and creativity, the original Ferris wheel, at 250 feet tall, was larger than any Ferris wheel in the western hemisphere today. In this fact-filled biography, author Dani Sneed describes how the visionary George Ferris overcame great obstacles to build his dream.

While these titles include simple biographies, they are also career and invention materials, and would be useful in classes on a variety of topics: introductions to inventors, inventions, the creative process, useful tools to society, or the history of common items. They provide helpful time lines of the inventors lives as well as background on their most famous creations and information about the items uses. Color and black-and-white photos and color graphics add to the information on most pages. These books are easy to read and full of enough facts to make a solid basis for research, but its doubtful that students will pick them for pleasure reading., School Library Journal July 2008
