Sound Projects with a Music Lab You Can Build

Flutes, harps, guitars, pianos, drums… All musical instruments use fundamental properties of physics to produce their sounds. In this instructive manual, Robert Gardner explains how to build homemade versions of a variety of instruments, all while learning about frequency, vibration, harmonics, and more. Scattered throughout are suggestions for expanding ideas presented in the book to science fair projects.

Looking for a great source of inquiry-based sound-related activities? Want to build a wide variety of inexpensive musical instruments? If so, then this is your book! The author does an excellent job presenting a balance of open-ended questions and supporting information that provide a solid foundation for successful experimentation while forcing students to actually investigate phenomena in order to learn the answers to the questions posed. There are many intriguing ideas for science fair projects, as well as perhaps the best introduction to science fairs and the scientific method that I have encountered.
