Zoom in on Maps

Age Level: 5–8  Grade Level: K–3

Maps are an incredible source of information. They show us where we need to go, teach us about weather patterns and political differences across regions, and even help us avoid traffic jams. Drawing on both analog and digital mapping, this series will guide young readers through different maps used by both the general public and professionals. Simple text teaches students all about the special features of each map—its scale, legend, grids, and symbols—and how to read it. Before long, readers will be able to measure distance, recognize land features, and plan a route for their next trip.
• Activity and research prompts engage young readers in learning the essential skill of map-reading
• Full-color photos of maps give students a direct reference for learning
• “Words to Know” and “Learn More” sections teach readers vocabulary and provide further resources for study
• Teaches "visual literacy," a set of skills necessary to “read” images and grasp the image's intended meaning, evaluating it, and incorporating it into other knowledge
•  Using maps in the classroom invites curiosity, encourages exploration, and inspires problem solving; maps can be used to explore a multitude of topics and can incorporate visual learning, spatial thinking, and quantitative skills
